I.M.Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy
General Information
We would like to introduce you the most prestigious educational establishment, which is situated in the very heart of Russia, its capital - Moscow.
There is a worldwide recognized higher medical establishment in Moscow, I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy (former the 1st Moscow Institute of Medicine). This institution has about two and a half hundred year history and a 50-year experience of training foreigners.
Moscow Medical Academy (MMA) is one of a few Russian medical higher education establishments whose diplomas are recognized by Medical Council of different countries.
History of the Academy
The I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy (MMA) is the oldest and the largest national medical higher educational institution. For more than 240 years I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy, previous name - I.M. Sechenov First Moscow Institute of Medicine has been playing the leading role in the development of medical science and training of medical and scientific personnel.
A lot of outstanding figures of Russian medical science studied, worked and founded their own scientific schools there; among them Zybelin S.G., Mudrov M.Y., Sklifosovskiy N.Y., Filatov N.F., Snegiryov V.F. and many others. The Soviet period is marked by formation of large scientific schools of Abrikosov A.I., Burdenko N.N., Semashko N.A., Vasilenko V.H., Zhdanov D.A. Such names as Pirogov N.I., Sechenov I.M., Botkin S.P., Chekhov A.P. are known all over the world.
Academy Today
Today the academy is a major center for training, certification and upgrading the medical personnel and pharmacists. Academic studies are closely integrated with fundamental and applied research, providing highly qualified medical care to the population and promoting the advances of medical science and pharmaceutics.
The academy is at the head of the academic - methodological association of Russian medical institutions.
It has 20 buildings for studies, classrooms and lecture halls, a clinical center with 17 diverse clinics for 3000 patients, the research center, the main library, publishing section, a video-photo department, the laboratories, the botanical garden and several students' hostels.
Tuition
There are the following faculties with 177 chairs at the Academy: medical, disease-prevention, pharmaceutical (day and evening courses), stomatological, higher nurses' training (day and evening courses), foreign undergraduate education and foreign students faculty, continuous professional training, continuous disease-prevention education, pharmacist upgrading, health service management, academic education, and premedical education (as school-university and college-university complexes).
About 9000 students from Russia and foreign countries study annually at the Academy. They are trained in:

- Faculty for research and teaching staff training
About 1500 graduates are involved in post-graduate training as part of internship (primary specialization), clinical internship (residency), covering all clinical specialities, or post-graduate courses.
The Academy employs about 2 thousand members of the faculty, research associates and doctors including 300 Professors and more than 1,000 Ph.D. in medicine. The achievements of the scientists working at the I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy are widely-known both in Russia and abroad.
Moscow Medical Academy develops extensive scientific cooperation with medical research and training centers abroad. It is a member of the World Association of Universities. International, All-Russia, intercollegiate scientific congresses, conferences, symposia and seminars are regularly organized by or with the Academy's support. A number of well-known scientists from MMA participate as specialists and experts in the work of UN, WHO and UNESCO bodies.
In the national history of higher medical educational institutions, the Academy has been the first to found totally new faculties. After two years of study, the best students of the Academy and other medical institutes of Russia may continue their education at the faculty for research and teaching staff training. Working by individual curricula under supervision of the leading scientists of the Academy, these students acquire thorough knowledge of the chosen field and skills to do research.
To keep up with the international standards the Academy has also established a new trend in higher medical professional education in Russia - the training of nurses with a higher education The faculty of higher education for nurses trains specialists in nursing with a background in management and teaching.
There are 160 chairs at the academy staffed by more than 2000 highly qualified specialists, 86,5% of the Heads of departments with various academic degrees. 34% of the scientists are Members and Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (RAMS), Honored Scientists of the Russian Federation, and the State Prize laureates. Many chairs function on the basis of research centres and institutes.
Annually about 30 doctoral and more than 100 candidate's degrees are awarded. Most themes deal with problems of a nation-wide importance, such as development of new methods of preventive treatment, diagnosis and treatment of most common conditions, hygienic norms and environmental protection measures, creating optimal conditions for work and leisure, a rational diet, evolving new drugs and dosage forms, and medical technology; studies morphofunctional and biochemical basis of the body's vital activities working out methodological and methodical aspects of educational and teaching activities.
The academy maintains collaborative ties with various international organizations. Among them are the International Association of the University Programs for Health Management, the World Organization of National Colleges, Academies and General Practitioners, the American International Alliance on Health Problems, the European Association of Management in Health Care, the World Academy of Medical Education.
The international reputation of the I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy has been confirmed by the high rating obtained in the UNESCO-held university competition. Since 1989 it has been taking the second place among the higher medical institutions of the world.
Foreign Students Faculty
The I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy has gained a considerable experience in the foreign students training. Since 1949 specialists from 83 countries have been trained there. The Academy's diploma is accepted by most states.
After passing the state examinations, the graduates receive the Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Stomatology or Master of Pharmacy degree. The Moscow Medical Academy provides the postgraduate training of foreigners in the internship, clinical residency, postgraduate courses and the doctorate in all clinical specialities and provides probation opportunities.
In 1997 the faculty was divided into the Russian Medium Department and the English Medium Department where instruction is conducted in English (for Doctor of Medicine degree), and the French Medium Department (for Master of Pharmacy degree). At their disposal the students have the Academy library which has the literature available both in Russian and foreign languages.

Medical Faculty
Russian Medium Department (Doctor of Medicine)
In order to be admitted to this department the applicant should first take the Preparatory Course. The duration of this course is one academic year. During this year the applicant will be studying Russian language and basic disciplines: Chemistry, Physics, and Biology. The duration of the course in General Medicine Faculty, Russian Medium Department is six years. After the successful completion of the academic curriculum final-year students are awarded Doctor of Medicine degree and the State Diploma.
The students are provided with hostel accommodation, on sharing basis - 2-3 persons in a room, library and sport facilities.
English Medium Department (Doctor of Medicine)
The duration of the full course is six years. The tuition is arranged completely in English during the whole course. After the successful completion of the academic curriculum final-year students receive the State Diploma and are awarded Doctor of Medicine degree.
The students are provided with hostel accommodation, on sharing basis - 2-3 persons in a room, library and sport facilities.
Pharmaceutical Faculty
Russian Medium Department (Master of Pharmacy)
The tuition is arranged in Russian. The duration of the program is 6 years (including the Preparatory Course). Those students who have not taken the Preparatory Course are tested on the Russian language, Biology and Chemistry. According to the results achieved they are admitted to the first year of the Pharmaceutical Faculty. After the successful completion of the academic curriculum the students receive the State Diploma and are awarded Master of Pharmacy degree.
The students are provided with hostel accommodation, on sharing basis - 2-3 persons in a room, library and sport facilities.
French Medium Department (Master of Pharmacy)
The first three years the tuition is arranged completely in French. The duration of the program is five years. After the successful completion of the academic curriculum final-year students receive the State Diploma and are awarded Master of Pharmacy degree.
The students are provided with hostel accommodation, on sharing basis - 2 persons in a room, library and sport facilities.
Stomatological Faculty
Russian Medium Department (Doctor of Stomatology)
The training is conducted in Russian. The duration of the training course is 5 years. Foreign students are admitted to the 1st year on test results in Russian, Chemistry and Biology (except for those who finished the Preparatory Course). On successful completion of the training course at the Stomatological faculty students receive the State Diploma and are awarded Doctor of Stomatology degree.
The students are provided with hostel accommodation, on sharing basis - 2-3 persons in a room, library and sport facilities.
Foreign Students Faculty Structure

The I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy has gained a considerable experience in the foreign students training. Since 1949 over 2500 specialists from 83 countries have been trained there. During the recent three years, the number of foreign students has tripled. Recently the Foreign Students Faculty of Academy celebrated its 50th anniversary. Today about 8600 students are currently studying at Moscow Medical Academy, and more than 1500 students, undergraduates and postgraduates, are foreigners from 79 countries of all continents. That proves the high value of the diploma of Academy in the world.
All foreign students, interns, and postgraduates are provided with accommodation in the hostels located near the study buildings.

Applicants are admitted after an interview, testing and finally signing contracts. Foreigners study in groups of seven to ten people. The second-year students attend clinics where they learn nursing experience. Clinical subjects are taught from the third year of study.
Scientific societies work at all departments where students can raise their level of knowledge and study any topic of interest.
In 1997 a faculty division was opened where instruction is conducted in English. At the students’ disposal there is the Academy library which has the literature both in Russian and foreign languages.
I.M.Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy is entitled to support educational activity in an area of secondary, higher secondary, higher, post-gradual and additional professional training in medicine according State Certificates. Academy gives to foreign students an opportunity to graduate on the following specialities:
- 040100 – General Medicine (Doctor of Medicine) - Russian medium;
- 040100 – General Medicine (Doctor of Medicine) - English medium;
- 040400 – Stomatology (Doctor of Stomatology) - Russian medium;
- 040500 – Pharmacy (Master of Pharmacy) - Russian medium;
- 040500 – Pharmacy (Master of Pharmacy) - French medium.
After passing the state examinations the graduates receive the Doctor of Medicine or Master of Pharmacy degree. I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy provides the postgraduate training to foreigners in the internship, clinical residency, postgraduate courses and the doctorate in all clinical specialities and provides probation opportunities (short-term probation included).
Post-gradual and additional education is managed in compliance with the corresponding programs of the medical, stomatological and pharmaceutical specialties.
Entrance requirements
The enrolment is conducted once an academic year – in June-August and relies on tests (Biology and Chemistry) and interview, and results of Russian language test (for the Russian Medium). The enrolment to the Preparatory course (1 year duration) is conducted up to 10th September.
Annual admission is about 400 foreign applicants. Before admission to the Preparatory department, Medical, Stomatological and Pharmaceutical faculties candidates for the Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Stomatology and Master of Pharmacy degree must have satisfied the entrance requirements of MMA. Admission criteria is 75-100% marks with higher secondary education.
Candidates for postgraduate training must have Higher Medical University education with the degree of M.D. or Ph.M., confirmed by the Diploma, recognized for admission to higher educational institutes for postgraduate courses.
Although studies are the most important thing, much attention is also paid to sports and entertainment . Foreign students can attend sections of swimming, tennis, volleyball, track and field athletics, etc.
Presently Moscow Medical Academy admits without any limitation young men and women from the countries of South and South-East Asia, Middle East and Northern Africa and from Europe as well. The excellent preparatory course, the hostel with comfortable living conditions, a division with instruction conducted in English have brought the level of MMA training standards closer to those of the best higher medical educational institutions of the member-countries of the European Community.
Preparatory Course
Russian Medium Department
At this course termed as the Preparatory the students learn Russian and study such subjects in Russian as: chemistry, biology and physics. The duration of the course is 10 month (from October 1 till June 31). After the successful completion of the course the students are admitted to the first year of the Medical or Pharmaceutical Faculty.
The students are provided with hostel accommodation, on sharing basis - 2-3 persons in a room, library and sport facilities.
Postgraduate Courses
More than 40 chairs are offered for the postgraduate training. The training is conducted in Russian. The course is preceded by a one-year Preparatory course of studying Russian for the doctors who come to continue their medical education in Russia.
The requirements for the postgraduate training: the degree of M.D. or Ph.M. Entrance test: interview on the speciality chosen in Russian.

Contract
Foreign citizens admitted to the chosen faculty are to sign the Contract. The Contract stipulates the course fees, including tuition, accommodation, defines the obligations of the Academy and the trainee.
Study schedule
The academic year starts on September, 1 (at the Preparatory Faculty - on October, 1). There are 2 semesters in an academic year: from September to January and from February to June.
Accommodation and Residential Service
Foreign students signed Contract on education with accommodation after payment may get residence at any of the following MMA hostels:
- Hostel in Azovskaya street, 15, Kahovskaya metro station. For foreign students 1-, 2- and 3-bed comfortable rooms are available;
- Hostel in 11th Parkovaya street, 15, Pervomayskaya metro station. For foreign students 2-bed rooms are available;
- Hostel in 11th Parkovaya street, 7, Pervomayskaya metro station. For foreign students 2-bed rooms are available.
In MMA hostels Internet, physical training rooms, cafeteria are available. Comfortable kitchens and reading halls are equipped.
Now additional hostel building is under construction.
Visa
Procedure of visa issuing on coming to Russia for studying.
After examination of documents, submitted by applicant, and making decision on enlisting in the Preparatory courses or in Foreign Students faculty (first year) the foreign student during 25 days should get from dean’s office invitation letter for coming to study.
To get such letter it is necessary to submit to dean’s office the following documents:
- Two copies of national passport (passport should be valid through 18 month minimum);
- Original invitation for entry visa for studying in Russia issuing in Consulate of Russian Embassy in the applicant country.
Medical insurance is entitled to get:
- medical care in most of MMA hospitals;
- ambulatory care in MMA Polyclinic for students and employees.
